ASSISTANT COACH

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Reports To: Program Director

Position Summary: Assistant Coaches help Coaches with teaching, coaching, and mentoring Motogo participants over the course of a program. Programs include breaking down, reassembling, and kickstarting Honda CB350 vintage motorcycles and engines and assembling of plastic V8 engine models. Participants are ages 12+ from a variety of backgrounds and communities. Technical and coach training are included in your employment. Must be willing to be a life-long learner, fail in front of others, and in general, be open to the commitment being a mentor to youth comes with, even on hard days. Education experience important. Former teachers, sports coaches, educators and mentors with teaching experience can be taught to build a motorcycle, but not every technical expert can turn into a teacher for teens.

Compensation: This is a 12-month, renewable 1099 contract position with a pay range of $20.00-$26.00 per hour based on experience. Contract renewable upon completion.

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist Motogo Coaches to deliver curriculum according to the format and timeline for each program. 

  • Deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences; establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities. 

  • Help with the collection of video recordings of  students' progress and development. 

  • Excite students about motorcycle maintenance, encourage them to try things they wouldn’t normally do, and inspire student learning through example of positivity, creating a safe place for them to try new things.

  • Reliable and consistent schedule through duration of a partner program

Work Environment

  • Programs often take place on a school campus, but not always in a classroom. This includes underneath stadium bleachers, in a hallway, in an outdoor garage.

  • Flexibility is important! Spaces are sometimes reflective of the weather outside.

  • The workspace can be small at a school, so be prepared to maneuver around equipment and participants working.


Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to lift and manipulate tools. 

  • Able to lift 50 lbs at times, including moving of motorcycle equipment and tools

  • Able to reach, bend, sit and stoop. 

  • Required to talk and hear over loud noises. 

  • Able to stand for long periods of time on hard floors (typically 2 hours) while coaching

Technical Experience

  • Knowledge and experience with motorcycles and/or small engines is preferred, but not required

  • Familiarity with Google Suite, including Gmail and Google Calendar

  • Strong communication skills - students rely on your coaching to guide them through the process

  • Interest in engaging with participants and meeting them at their learning level

Availability

  • Generally available Monday-Friday from 8:00am-6:00pm and/or Saturdays 8:30am-12:00pm (most programs fall within this time frame, although program schedules will vary and you may only work a few days a week) Subject to negotiation prior to hiring.

  • Work at minimum 15 hours and up to 25 hours per week. This includes program coaching hours, preparation hours, and space organization hours.

Training Requirements

  • Pass the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation [BCI] and FBI background checks

  • Complete trauma-informed care training

  • Complete VIRTUS training for teaching in schools within the Diocese of Cleveland

  • Possess a driver’s license and ability to maintain a driving record and appropriate insurance coverage

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift 50 lbs at times, including moving of motorcycle equipment and tools

  • Able to stand for long periods of time (typically 2 hours) while coaching

  • Create and maintain a safe space for participants. Able to move about the shop class to meet the needs of the students.
